LOTMA’s Top
Tips
to Beat the
Traffic Jam
1. Join a
Carpool:
It’s simple!
Just share a
ride to work
with a colleague
or
neighbor and
take advantage
of the carpool
lanes. LOTMA can
help you find a carpool
partner and
offers support
programs and
incentives.
Carpooling is
flexible . . . do it
everyday or just
once in a while.
2. Ride
the LOTMA Commuter
Express:
This
"first-class"
express coach
service picks up
in Mililani
Mauka and Waipio
Gentry and
provides
convenient and
comfortable
transportation
for workers in
Honolulu and
Waikiki. Monthly
passes are $95
(full-time) and
$55 (20 rides).
3. Join a
Vanpool: This State
subsidized
program provides
vans for shared
commuting.
Monthly
subscriptions
are only $55
(plus shared gas
and
parking) and
LOTMA even
offers a 50%
subsidy for new
eligible
vanpoolers to
help you get
started.
Vanpooling works
best for people
who work a
regular schedule
and have longer
commutes.
4. Ride
TheBus or Take TheBoat: The
award-winning
TheBus offers
nearly 100
routes,
including
several
limited-stop
express routes
between popular
locations. At
only $40 per
month, TheBus is
the best commute
deal around! Now TheBoat offers three daily roundtrips from Kalaeloa Harbor to the Aloha Tower while connecting by shuttle service to areas near Kapolei, Ewa and Makaha, and you can use your monthly bus pass, a transfer or pay $2 for a single ride.
5. Bike or
Walk to Work: If you work near
home, try
biking
or walking to
work instead of
driving. It’s
healthy and
free! You’ll
find you arrive
at work
refreshed and
invigorated. In
some situations,
you may even be
able to bicycle
to work faster
than you can
drive!
6.
Compress Your
Work Schedule:
Work four
ten-hour days
per week
("4/40") or
eight nine-hour
days and one
eight-hour day
every two weeks
("9/80"). You’ll
get an extra day
off every week
or every other
week! Ask
your employer
about this
"flex-time"
alternative.
7. Avoid
Peak Commute
Hours: Traffic on H-1
generally peaks
between 6:00
a.m. – 7:15 a.m.
and between 3:15
p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Try working a
9:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m.
schedule to
avoid the worst
traffic.
8.
Telecommute: Skip your
commute and work
at home instead.
Even if you
can’t
telecommute
every day, you
may be able to
do it once a
week to
catch up on
special
projects.
Talk to your
employer about
this option. |
